Papua New Guinea Declared a Christian Nation: A Triumph of Faith and Prayer

On March 12, 2025, Papua New Guinea (PNG) etched a monumental chapter in its history, officially declaring itself a Christian nation with an overwhelming parliamentary vote of 80 to 4. For our Papua New Guinea Bible Church family, this moment is nothing short of miraculous—a resounding answer to decades of prayer and steadfast faith. The words of 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV) ring true today: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” We stand in awe, witnessing God’s promise unfold before us.

A Deep-Rooted Legacy of Faith

The seeds of Christianity were planted in PNG over a century ago when missionaries arrived in the late 19th century, bringing the light of the Gospel to our shores. Since then, faith has blossomed, with the 2011 census revealing that 98% of our population professes Christ. Our Pentecostal brothers and sisters, making up 10%, join Roman Catholics (26%), Lutherans (18%), and others in a vibrant tapestry of belief. Across villages and cities, churches have been pillars of hope—establishing schools, clinics, and community centers. This declaration reflects that legacy, a bold stand against Psalm 9:17 (KJV): “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” PNG has chosen to honor Him instead.

The Tireless Work of PNG Bible Church Members

This victory belongs to our faithful members serving in politics and government offices. For years, they’ve poured their hearts into this cause—drafting proposals since the National Executive Council’s approval in 2020, engaging in nationwide consultations in 2022, and tirelessly advocating for a nation rooted in God’s truth. They’ve called on our congregation to lift them up in prayer, trusting God to guide their steps. Now, the Constitution’s Preamble exalts “God, the Father; Jesus Christ, the Son; and Holy Spirit,” names the Bible a national symbol, and embraces Christian values—all while preserving religious freedom under Section 45. Prime Minister James Marape captured the spirit of this moment, saying it places “God in His rightful place,” a tribute to the Church’s enduring role in uniting PNG before and after independence.

A Heart Overflowing with Gratitude

We are so grateful for this day, a testament to God’s faithfulness to a nation that seeks Him. As we celebrate, let us commit to praying for PNG’s future, that it may remain a beacon of righteousness and healing in the Pacific. Praise God for hearing our cries and exalting our land as a Christian nation!
