KATILOMA, Southern Highlands Province — The PNG Bible Church in Katiloma District hosted a spirited Easter service, imbued with a palpable sense of divine presence, drawing over 600 worshippers to honor the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Nestled within the Kagua-Erave Electorate, Katiloma District welcomed congregations from Sugu Valley, Kagua Station, Wapu Sumi, and Batiri Local Level Government areas for the poignant commemoration.
The service resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom, visibly moved, publicly reaffirmed their steadfast devotion to God, pledging to uphold their faith until Christ’s return or their final days. This outpouring of commitment highlighted the community’s resilience in the face of past adversity.
Sugu Valley, home to Katiloma District, endured a devastating three-year tribal conflict that claimed more than 30 lives and left the region in ashes. The PNG Bible Church emerged as a cornerstone of reconciliation, spearheading a peace crusade and delivering humanitarian aid to quell the violence and foster enduring peace.
Local leaders expressed profound gratitude for the church’s transformative efforts. “Through the peace crusade and Dr. Philly Mapiria’s humanitarian support, we achieved reconciliation. It was divine intervention that brought peace and ended the tribal fighting,” said Mr. Mark Wala, a prominent leader in Sugu Valley.
Located just four kilometers from Kagua Government Station, Katiloma District is one of 24 districts under the PNG Bible Church. Its worship grounds were recently relocated to Mabare Local Church along the Kagua-Erave and Gulf Highway. Despite the promise of the new site, the district faces pressing needs, notably the completion of its district church, which remains unfinished and hosted the recent Easter service. The Easter service concluded on a triumphant note, leaving Katiloma’s faithful united in hope and spiritual renewal, a testament to the community’s journey from conflict to peace.
