Our Identity Christ

Sermon Title: Our Identity in Christ

Scripture Reference: II Corinthians 5:14-17 (KJV)

"14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. 16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 17 Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

I. Introduction

Dear brothers and sisters, tonight, we embark on a profound exploration of our identity in Christ. Our guide on this journey is the Word of God, specifically II Corinthians 5:14-17 from the King James Version, which illuminates the essence of our identity as believers.

II. How the World Identifies You

II.A. The World's Measure: Material Wealth and Obligations (Luke 12:15)

Society often evaluates us based on our material wealth and contributions to tribal obligations. This can lead to unfair judgments and even depression, causing some to stray from their spiritual path.

II.B. The World's Expectations: Education and Career Success (Proverbs 3:5-6)

The pursuit of education and career success can be misleading indicators of our worth. The pressure to conform to these standards can lead to inner turmoil and even spiritual backsliding.

II.C. The World's Misconception: Prosperity Gospel (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

The misconception that serving God guarantees wealth is a dangerous one. The "Prosperity Gospel" distorts true faith. We must focus on serving God out of love and devotion, not for personal gain.

II.D. Cultural Notions of Leadership (1 Samuel 16:7)

Cultural notions of leadership, often based on eloquence, can be detrimental. Your true worth is not determined by your ability to speak publicly but by your role as a leader within your home and community.

II.E. The Act of Doing Good (Galatians 6:9-10)

The act of doing good should stem from a pure heart, without expecting something in return. We must avoid attaching strings to our generosity. Remember, your identity isn't defined by the quantity of good deeds you perform.

III. How God Identifies You

III.A. God's Perspective: Children of God (John 1:12)

We are described as children of God. This means we have the privilege of calling Him our Father. He is not only our Father but also our provider and supplier, meeting all our needs according to His infinite riches.

III.B. Co-Heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17)

As co-heirs with Christ, we share in His sufferings and inherit His blessings. This shared inheritance includes rulership over various aspects of God's kingdom, as seen in Matthew 25:14-21.

III.C. Priesthood in Christ (1 Peter 2:9)

We are also priests, with direct access to God. Just as priests of old interceded for the people, we can present the needs of others before God, as seen in 1 Peter 2:9.

III.D. Ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)

We are ambassadors for Christ, representing the highest diplomatic rank from heaven on earth. Our mission is to fulfill God's will and spread His message, as stated in II Corinthians 5:20-21.

IV. Conclusion

In conclusion, it is vital to recognize our identity in Christ and not allow the world or cultural expectations to define us. Regardless of the challenges or pressures we face, our true worth is found in Him alone. Let us pray and seek a deeper understanding of our identity in Christ, recognizing that it holds unparalleled significance in the light of eternity.

V. Invitation and Prayer

If you desire to know Christ more intimately and experience the freedom He offers, I invite you to come forward, and let us pray together.
